Getting started
What you can do on Typtation
Listen to the English in a video and type exactly what you hear — dictation practice. The video stops at each subtitle and moves on once you've typed it right.
- Public videos can be practised straight away, without an account.
- With an account you can add your own YouTube or video files and review the words you missed in your Wordbook.
Trying it without signing up
Press Try a suggested video on the front page, or pick any video from the list.
- Without an account, your progress and missed words aren't saved.
What an account gives you
Sign up with your email from Start for free at the top right.
- 1Add any YouTube video or your own files (Add Video)
- 2Keep the words you missed and review them every day (Wordbook)
- 3Your videos and progress are kept (Watch history, and Continue on the home page)
- 4The home page suggests videos for you, based on what you watch
How to practise
How practice works
Open a video and press play: it stops at each subtitle and repeats that part. Type the English you hear into the strip below the video.
- 1Press ▶ to play
- 2It stops at the end of the subtitle and repeats it
- 3Type what you hear (the blanks)
- 4When it's right it turns green and the next subtitle starts
- At the end you'll see the words you missed and a video to try next.
Keyboard shortcuts
On a computer you can use these keys:
- 1Tab (hold): show the answer
- 2Enter (hold): show the translation
- 3Esc: pause / resume
- 4← →: go to the previous / next subtitle
- On a phone, tap a blank to see that word. The Answer and Translation buttons under the video show on a tap and hide on another (they also hide when the next line starts).
Changing how you practise
Under the video choose Common words, Every word or Dictation. Common words has you type everyday words while harder ones are shown. Every word has you type every word, letter by letter. Dictation is the real thing: write the whole line, press Enter, and it's marked in red pen and kept in your Dictation Notebook. A video's Beginner / Intermediate / Advanced tag is how hard the video is — separate from how you practise.
- In an assignment from a teacher, the way of practising is set by the teacher.
Practising without typing spaces
Turn on Skip spaces under the video and you can move on without typing the spaces between words.
- With an account you can also change it in Account settings.
Changing the playback speed
Use the speed button (1x etc.) on the control bar under the video to slow it down.
- Common words starts a little slower.
Showing or hiding YouTube's captions
YouTube's own captions are hidden at first, since they'd show the answer. Turn on YouTube captions under the video to show them.
- Your choice is remembered on that device.
Speaking practice (shadowing)
Choose Shadowing under the video: after the model line you say it the same way, and AI checks each word (a Pro feature).
- 1Press Start and it runs by itself: model → your turn → score
- 2It repeats from the model until you pass; then Next moves on
- 3Tap a coloured word to see which sound was off and how to say it; My voice plays your try back
- 4Turn subtitles off to practise with just your ears and mouth
- Allow the microphone. Earphones keep the video's sound out of the mic. If it isn't working, Skip moves on.
Adding videos
Adding a YouTube video
Paste a YouTube link (and, if you like, its transcript) and it becomes a practice video. You need an account.
- 1Press Add Video
- 2Choose YouTube URL and paste the video's link
- 3On YouTube, open Show transcript in the video's description
- 4Select the whole transcript and copy it (Ctrl/⌘ A → C)
- 5Paste it into Paste subtitles now (optional) and press Add
- Pasted subtitles are re-split by AI into lengths that are easy to hear.
- If no subtitles could be made, Add subtitles manually appears on the video in My Videos.
- YouTube doesn't allow subtitles to be fetched automatically.
Adding your own video file
In Add Video choose Upload a video and pick the file. AI makes the subtitles.
- Making subtitles takes a little while; you can leave the page.
- Large files are uploaded in parts automatically.
Public, unlisted and private
Choose who can see each video. You can change it any time in My Videos.
- 1Public: anyone can watch, and it shows in lists and search
- 2Unlisted: only people with the link
- 3Private: only you
- Only make videos public that you made or are allowed to share. A YouTube video can be public if it's public on YouTube.
Fixing subtitles
Fixing one subtitle while practising
On your own videos, a pencil appears at the top left of the subtitle strip. Press it to fix that subtitle's text and timing on the spot.
Fixing all subtitles in the editor
In My Videos, press … on a video and open Edit subtitles to fix them all in a list.
- 1Fix the text, nudge start/end times with ±, or set them to Now
- 2Split, join with the next, add or remove subtitles
- 3Made a mistake? Undo (Ctrl/⌘ Z)
- 4Press Save changes at the end
- ← → move between subtitles and play just that one (press Esc first if you're typing).
Tidying subtitles that are too long or cut mid-sentence
In the editor, Tidy with AI splits subtitles that are too long and joins ones cut mid-sentence. The words themselves don't change.
- Undo takes it back; nothing changes until Save changes.
Matching subtitle timing to the audio
If subtitles and audio are out of step, there are two ways to fix it:
- 1Tap to sync: while it plays, press Space (or the button on a phone) as each subtitle starts speaking. You can slow it down and correct for your reaction time
- 2Timeline: drag a subtitle's edge to fine-tune; letting go plays that part. Swipe the strip to move along
Wordbook & review
Saving missed words to your Wordbook
When you finish a video you'll see the words you missed. Tick the ones to review and press Add to Wordbook.
- Words already saved are shown faded.
Daily review
Open your Wordbook to see today's words. Press Start and review each one with the audio of the moment it came up.
- The better you know a word, the longer until it comes back. The home page shows today's count too.
For teachers
Turning on teacher mode
To hand out assignments, first turn on teacher mode.
- 1Sign up and log in
- 2Open Account settings from the icon at the top right
- 3Turn on Use teacher mode
- 4When Assignments appears in the menu, you're set
- You can still use it for your own English practice.
Handing out a video as an assignment
Any public video, or one of your own, can be an assignment.
- 1Open the video's page and press Assign
- 2Enter a name, the way to practise, and a note for students (optional), then Create
- 3Send the link to students with Copy link (or a messaging app)
- Students don't need an account — they open the link and type their name.
- The way of practising is fixed by the teacher.
Seeing students' results
Open Assignments: each one shows how many started, how many finished, and when they last practised. See results shows each student's progress and the words the class missed most.
- Only the teacher who handed it out can see the results; other teachers' assignments of the same video are kept separate.
Closing, reopening or deleting an assignment
On Assignments each one can be Closed, Reopened or Deleted. Once closed, new students can't start it.
- Closed assignments stay under the Closed tab. Deleting also removes the students' results.
Account & settings
Watch history
Watch history (from the icon at the top right) shows the videos you watched and how far you got, by date. Unfinished ones also appear under Continue on the home page.
- You can Remove from history or Clear all history. Only you can see it.
Organising the videos you added (My Videos)
In My Videos you can watch the videos you added, sort them into playlists and change who can see them.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account at the bottom of Account settings. This can't be undone.
FAQ
Does it cost anything?
Almost everything is free: listening practice with videos, the Wordbook, the notebook, Typing Rush. Shadowing (AI pronunciation checking) is part of Typtation Pro.
The video won't play
Reload the page and press ▶ again.
- A YouTube video can't play once it's deleted or made private on YouTube. In some regions (such as mainland China) YouTube itself is blocked — Typtation's own videos play everywhere.
- An uploaded video can't be practised until its subtitles are ready.
Subtitles and audio are out of sync
On your own videos, fix it with Tap to sync or the Timeline in the subtitle editor. On someone else's video, the owner needs to fix it.
Can I make someone else's video public?
Only make public videos you made or are allowed to share. YouTube videos play in YouTube's own player, so a video that's public on YouTube can be public here.
